Toms River, about twenty minutes from our Jackson base, is built on post-war capes and ranches — compact, solid houses drawn for a different era of family life, with small closed kitchens and bedrooms tucked under the roofline.

That housing stock is our favourite kind of remodel, because the gains are so large: a cape's attic becomes a real second floor, a ranch's kitchen wall comes out and the back of the house opens up, and a modest footprint gains a proper primary suite through a rear addition. The bones are almost always worth it.
